Convection Vs. Conventional Ovens

Posted on 06/16/2023

Convection vs. conventional ovens—what is the difference, and which should you choose? The choice you make can have a major impact on the way food is cooked and the results you get. In this blog, we detail the difference between the two and some of our favorite models.

What is a Convection Oven?

dishwasher main image

A convection oven is an oven that uses fans to circulate hot air throughout the oven cavity. These ovens use a fan and exhaust system to draw air in and circulate it around the food in the oven. This leads to a more even temperature throughout the oven which cooks the food more quickly.

What is a Conventional Oven?

A conventional oven relies on radiant heat in order to cook your food. This is a traditional method of cooking and cooks more slowly than a convection oven does.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Before deciding which type of oven is best for your household, weigh the pros and cons of each type of oven.

Convection Oven

Advantages

The advantages of convection cooking include:

  • More evenly cooked food. Since convection ovens circulate hot air evenly throughout the oven, food is more evenly heated.
  • Lower energy consumption. The fans that circulate air help reduce heat loss and lower energy consumption.
  • Versatility and improved results. Convection ovens are great for baking, roasting, broiling, and more.

Disadvantages

The disadvantages of using a convection oven include:

  • Higher risk of burning food. Food may cook faster than expected, causing it to burn or become overcooked.
  • Adjusted cooking times. Cooking in a convection oven may require you to adjust cooking times from conventional baking recipes.
  • Higher cost. Convection ovens can be more expensive to purchase than traditional ovens.

Conventional Oven

Advantages

The advantages of using a conventional oven include:

  • Budget-friendly. Conventional ovens are a great budget-friendly option.
  • Longer cooking times. Some recipes may take longer than a convection oven.
  • Less efficient. Conventional ovens use more energy than a convection oven due to heat loss.

Disadvantages

The disadvantages of using a conventional oven include:

  • Uneven cooking. Food may not be cooked as evenly as in a convection oven.
  • Longer cooking times. Some recipes may take longer than a convection oven.
  • Less efficient. Conventional ovens use more energy than a convection oven due to heat loss.

Tip

Did you know? Opting for low-heat settings when using your oven's self-cleaning feature prevents damage and prolongs its lifespan.
