How to Clean a Washing Machine

Posted on 05/11/2023

Washing machines are essential home appliances that we rely on to keep our clothes clean. However, we often forget to clean the machine itself, which can lead to a buildup of dirt, grime, and even mold or mildew. Regular cleaning and maintenance of your washing machine is essential to prolong its lifespan and prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.

Keep reading to learn the best way to clean a washing machine, including top-load and front-load machines, and discover tips to keep your machine clean and running smoothly.

Why Clean Your Washing Machine?

Over time, washing machines can develop a buildup of soap residue, fabric softener, and other debris that can cause unpleasant odors and affect the cleanliness of your clothes. In addition, the damp environment inside the machine can lead to mold and mildew growth, which can later pose health risks.

Regular cleaning is a simple and secure way to help remove this buildup, prevent mold, ensure your machine runs smoothly, and prolong the life of your washing machine. Here are the materials you will need to clean your machine: white vinegar, baking soda, a scrub brush, and a clean cloth.

Cleaning a Top-Load Washing Machine:

To clean a top-loading washer, simply follow the steps below. We suggest deep cleaning your machine using these steps at least once a month.

1. Fill the top-loading washer with hot water and add two cups of white vinegar.

2. Run the machine through a complete wash cycle on the hottest setting.

3. Pause the cycle after the tub fills with water and allow the vinegar and water mixture to soak for an hour.

4. After an hour, add one cup of baking soda and restart the machine. Run another complete wash cycle on the hottest setting.

5. Use a scrub brush and a solution of equal parts water and vinegar to clean the agitator, drum, and other visible surfaces.

6. Wipe down the interior and exterior of the machine with a clean cloth.

Cleaning a Front-Load Washing Machine:

Cleaning a front-load washing machine is similar to cleaning a top-load machine, but you will need to give the rubber gasket around the door some extra attention.

1. Mix a quarter cup of baking soda with a quarter cup of water to create a paste. Use this paste to scrub the rubber gasket around the door and any other visible surfaces.

2. Follow the same instructions that were mentioned above for the top-load washer.

Tip

Did you know? Mold can grow quickly in washers, especially front loading washers. Make sure to regularly wipe down the inside of the washing machine, including the seals on the door.

Tips to keep your washing machine clean:

In addition to regular cleaning, here are several things you can do to keep your washing machine clean in between deep cleaning sessions:

  • Leave the door or lid open between washes to allow air to circulate and prevent mold growth.
  • Use the correct amount of detergent for your load size to prevent buildup.
  • Use only high-efficiency (HE) detergent in front-load machines.
  • Remove clothes promptly after each wash to prevent dampness and mold growth.
  • Clean the detergent dispenser and door seal regularly to prevent buildup and mold growth.
